Everything in the Universe has a rhythm, everything dances.

Originally from Miami, Fl. Jamila Afrika developed a love for diverse music early on. Her parents provided a musically rich atmosphere and bought her first set of turntables at a young age. Her DJ career began in college as she hosted a popular late night radio show called “The Way it Should Be Done.” The show highlighted vintage tracks and the current hip hop and R&B songs that sampled them. It was during her time in college, that Jamila Afrika recognized that there weren’t a host of popular female-identified DJs. Going out to clubs and private events where there were no women on the DJ bill was highly frustrating to Jamila Afrika. She knew that she could keep an audience as engaged as the boys did and sought to do so. She befriended a local turntablist crew and they guided her through the learning process. Armed with the necessary rudimentary skills for DJing, Jamila Afrika set off on what would be come her most passionate venture to date.

Since then Jamila has been curating a musical style that is complimentary to any event or function. She incorporates a mixture of genres into her sets, that pay homage to the sonically unique Miami style. Jamila Afrika’s sets are as blended and varied as the audiences you’ll find on her dance floors.  Whether it is a open-format set for a Fortune 500 company or a genre specific event night Jamila Afrika is able to keep you and your crowd dancing!
